Executive Vacancies

Due to a member resignation during the summer period, the position of Vice- Chair Political became vacant. We co-opted Nick Vose to the position, however the society’s constitution stipulates that we must now hold an election. I am thus inviting any interested members to put their name forward for this position.

Vice-Chair Political plays a crucial role on the society’s Executive. Along with the chair, the Political position generally organises the society’s politically orientated activities. This includes, amongst other things, arranging speakers, discussion evenings and campaign days. If you are interested you must be prepared to give the society a relatively large time commitment, and you will be expected to turn up to the majority of the society’s events. Ideally, you should also have had some previous involvement with campaigning. Hustings will be held next Tuesday at 7pm in Furness Lecture Theatre 3 where you will be expected to give a 3 minute speech to those present about why you might be suitable and also be prepared to answer a range of questions from the floor. To nominate yourself for this position, all you have to do is send me an email to chair@exec.lancastercf.com by 4pm Tuesday 30th October.

Non-portfolio members of the Executive also need to be appointed. Every six months the Executive invites members to apply for the two positions, and we then choose two suitable candidates from those that applied. The non-portfolio position is an excellent way to get involved with the Executive. The role generally aids the Executive in running the society; you might be asked to plan an event or work on a campaign amongst other things. Other than this you will also be expected to show a level of commitment to the society, turning up regularly to events and campaign days. If you would like to apply then send me a 250 word email to chair@exec.lancastercf.com, explaining why you might be suitable for the role, before 5pm on Monday 29th October.

Beware of the Grip of the Euro Monster- Discussion Evening

On Tuesday 23rd October a policy discussion evening will take place in Pendle TV room at 7.00pm.
It is a chance for all members to have an informal 'rant' over a drink about the issues that affect our society today. For example: Do we live in an era of two party politics? Is it our obligation to be green? Is Brown bothered about Europe? If you were leader of our party what would your focus be on - Green and cuddly or mean and tough?

If you don’t have an opinion on the above (Which I doubt) then on a lighter side come along for a drink and ask:Was it a try? Were England right to drop Andrew Strauss? Are the spice girls back!?!

Campaign Day

On Saturday (20th October) our parliamentary candidate, Eric Ollerenshaw, and association Chairman, Robin Jackson, will be giving Lancaster Conservative Future members an introduction to the political situation in Lancaster. It should prove to be interesting and insightful to those who don’t know much about the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency, as well as being an opportunity to meet Eric and representatives from the wider association. We will be meeting in Furness bar at 12pm (or in Furness foyer where the porters’ lodge is if the bar is shut) and from there we will head off to Robin Jackson’s home (alternatively if you live in town you can meet us outside the Waterwitch pub at 12.35) . After the introductory talk we will go out and do some campaigning in Lancaster, followed by a couple of drinks at a nearby pub.

The New Politics has Arrived

Last week Lancaster Conservative Future attended the party Conference in Blackpool. It had been a week where the Conservative party set out some of the policies it would put to the British people in a General Election (now two years away). Another big theme of the week was the way we would produce a new type of politics in Britain (watch this video A New World: Change Required). The week was a complete success because conference united behind our new policies on tax, society and law and order. This was a contrast to the blood bath predicted by the media.

Now many people have said ‘that this will not last’ and ‘you are doing well because of the conference coverage’. I believe that these statements are wrong, and let me tell you why. I believe them to be wrong because no party has dramatically changed their fortunes to the extent the Conservative party has done over the past fortnight. Take the ICM poll today which puts the Conservatives on 43%, which is their highest poll rating since 1992. We are also setting the agenda in British politics, with the government stealing Conservative proposals made at the conference, such as increasing the inheritance tax threshold.

My final thoughts from the last two weeks are, yes we are doing well, and yes we are setting the agenda. However it is not a time to be complacent, we are doing well now, but things can change if we don’t keep our eye on the ball. We must keep ourselves focused and united on the job at hand, so Britain can win!

Verdes Meal

Any new members who couldn't come to our first meeting still have a chance to get to know everyone this week. CF are heading into town Tuesday 16th (week 2) for a meal at Verdes - an Italian restaurant. The tables booked for 8pm so we're going to meet at Furness Bar at 7pm. Anyone who wants to come and hasn't already told me, email me before Monday at vixroberts@hotmail.com. Any problems and just text or call me on 07751244097.
