Frequently Asked Questions

Here you can read answers to some misconceptions that people have of the Conservative Party, and become familiar with a few important points that should encourage you to enjoy your membership of Lancaster CF.

Do I have to wear a suit or kravat?

Not at all! This image of the Young Conservatives would be best abolished - lots of people wear crop tops, shorts, jeans - wear what you feel comfortable in. There is, of course, the opportunity for you to look smart at formal events such as when dining in Westminster, or when meeting at national and regional conferences and gettogethers.

Is anyone welcome to join?

Yes, anyone - no matter what your shape, size or colour is, everyone is welcome to join, provided they are not already affiliated with a national party other than the Conservatives.

Do I have to attend every meeting?

We stick to the Lancaster University term time-table of ten weeks and so you have a pick of many meetings to attend. Each meeting is usually on a Tuesday and begins around 7pm. There is no necessity to attend each and every meeting.

Come on, how much of an influence on party politics do you really have?

We are very closely affiliated with Conservative Central Office and Conservative Future and in regular communication. Many of our members have worked with the Conservative Party management teams in the past and still do so. As a branch, we make sure we communicate important issues back to the Conservative Party, who genuinely listen carefully to what we have to say and encourage regular feedback. We have met and been in discussion with people like Michael Howard, Liam Fox, George Osbourne, and David Cameron on many occasions, and as a member, you too can take the opportunity to meet such people and talk politics with them at a higher level.

So what do the Conservatives actually stand for?

The Conservatives have always stood for freedom and democracy, and less interference from the state. Yes, the Conservative Party may lower taxes, but they have the experience to spend more effectively and in a rather more balanced way, so for example, public services get the right amount of attention overall and not just one sector. As long as your money is spent effectively, there is not always a necessity to raise tax so high. We stand for full representation of the forgotten majority, and with a timetable for action, our members and the electorate will be able to hold us to account when in Government.

Can I write it on my CV?

Yes, if you are doing a political degree or would like a career in politics then Conservative Future is a stepping stone. We are a political organisation and it is the first step to gaining an insight into how local and national politics really works. With the connections you will make, it is certainly beneficial and enjoyable.

....If I don't want to drink, can I attend socials?

Of course! Alexander, our Social Secretary arranges a variety of socials that do not always involve drink.
